Did the Fed Statement Hint at a Rate Hike in September? Not Likely, Says Financial Expert Dan Celia

July 28, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—After a two-day meeting this week, the Federal Reserve announced yesterday that it would leave interest rates unchanged—not much of a surprise to those who are following a stagnant economy.

Janet Yellen went on to say in a Federal Open Market Committee statement that “near-term risks to the economic outlook have diminished” and the labor market is becoming tighter, Bloomberg reported, “suggesting conditions are getting more favorable for an increase in borrowing costs.”

Financial expert and national television and radio host Dan Celia says that while many think this may be a hint of higher rates in the fall, he disagrees.

“Janet Yellen said yesterday that the near-term risk to the economic outlook has diminished,” Celia said. “I’m not exactly sure what she considers as ‘near-term risk’ but nonetheless some are indicating that she is signaling a rate hike in September. In my opinion, that is extremely unlikely, but she possibly wants to run it flag up the pole and see what happens. One of the things we must be concerned about is the global economic outlook, and Janet Yellen will certainly take a strengthening dollar that would come as a result of raising rates into consideration—not to mention the political ramifications of raising rates in September.

“Raising rates would drive markets lower and increasing concerns for the possibility of four more years of Obama economics and would not be good for the Clinton campaign,” Celia continued. “But Yellen still continues to deny that the Federal Reserve has been politicized, and this would be an opportunity to drive home that point. But it’s not very likely.”

Earlier this week, Celia talked about the economy live from the DNC at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia during “Cavuto: Coast to Coast.” Last month, Celia was also in attendance at the exclusive Donald Trump meeting with evangelical leaders in New York City.
